FLY BROTHER Radio #001: Let's Fly with Greg Gross of I'm Black and I Travel
“I love being in [nature] because to me, that’s my spiritual place. That’s my church. That’s my temple. That’s my synagogue. All of it.” —Greg Gross

On this episode of the FLY BROTHER Radio Show, Ernest chats with Greg Gross, a journalist and explorer who spent four decades writing for publications such as the San Francisco Examiner, the Associated Press, and the San Diego Union-Tribune. Greg started his blog “I’m Black and I Travel” in 2009 as a way to document his travels with his late wife of 42 years. Later, he began offering tours through his company Trips by Greg, which connects intrepid travelers with the countries and cultures of Africa.
Through their conversation, Greg takes Ernest back to a time when he first started traveling and had to call travel agencies to book a flight anywhere. They reminisce about using phonebook-size flight schedules to plan imaginary trips as children. Greg also regales Ernest with some tales of his cross-country travels throughout the 1960s, including some safety tips he and his family had to follow.
They also discuss Greg’s recent travels to Canada and what he loves about the natural beauty of British Columbia. Finally, this episode touches upon African history, Greg’s favorite destinations on the continent, and the culture-focused tours he offers. Greg’s goal is to dispel the misinformation that often circulates around the internet and also focus his tours on the culture and people of Africa. As he puts it, “You can’t have a meaningful conversation with a wildebeest.”
There’s so much to learn about travel, history, and culture from this conversation. Tune in, and let’s fly!
