FLY BROTHER Radio #009: Oneika the Traveller
"When you live for yourself, then you can show up better for everybody else in your life.” —Oneika the Traveller
On this episode of the FLY BROTHER Radio Show, Ernest interviews his long-time friend Oneika Raymond, aka Oneika the Traveller, direct from New York City. Oneika is a freelance writer and travel media maven who’s been to over 90 countries and worked in several, including Hong Kong, Mexico and the UK. Throughout the episode, they catch up and talk about all things travel, including Oneika’s journey to where she is today.
Oneika grew up in the multicultural city of Toronto, Canada, though her family is from Jamaica. Her first exposure to travel was through the lens of being the daughter of immigrants, but she didn’t think of it as “travel.” For her, it was just a matter of visiting family in her second home.
Oneika tells Ernest all about her first real encounter with travel through studying abroad in France during her university days. The exposure to French speakers from around the world, plus all the traveling she did in her free time left Oneika with an insatiable travel bug.
The pair of friends discuss feeling homesickness for another country, using teaching skills as a way to live and work abroad, and the budgeting and sacrifices that sometimes go into prioritizing a lifestyle of travel.
For anyone considering making a life abroad, teaching overseas, or simply making travel a bigger part of their life, this conversation is not one to be missed!
