Remote and exotic, the islands of Hawaii still hold the promise of paradise here on Earth. To sell tickets to Paradise, airlines toggled between images of lush land- and seascapes and salacious depictions of the islanders: surf, sun, and skin. That combination still seems to work, as some 9 million people visited the archipelago last year. No matter how it’s sold, once you’ve experienced it, the aloha spirit stays with forever.
