Ernest travels to the mountain capital of Ethiopia for the beautiful and elaborate Epiphany Festival in one of the world’s oldest Christian societies, escorted by his friend, culture creator Heran Abate. Known as Timkat in the Amharic language of Ethiopia, this religious festival celebrates the day Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River.

Throughout the episode, Ernest witnesses the singing and dancing of this festival, along with the religious costumes the people wear while parading through the streets. It’s a crowded celebration, which presents its challenges, but in true Ethiopian fashion, Leo, one of the locals attending the festival, stops to welcome Ernest and as they bond over conversation about human connection.

In a country known for its coffee and its hospitality, Ernest starts his adventure with two cups of Ethiopian coffee and spends the day overly caffeinated as he explores the Addis Ababa. Later, he meets with Heran at 2000 Habesha Cultural Restaurant for a traditional Ethiopian meal that starts with a hand washing station brought to the table. As they eat the full spread of Ethiopian goodies, Heran tells Ernest about how Addis Ababa has changed throughout the years and why she decided to come back to Ethiopia after completing her higher education abroad. And, since an Ethiopian meal wouldn’t be complete without coffee, Ernest enjoys yet another cup of this liquid gold.
