Ep 108 - Tajikistan: Crown of the World

In this episode, Ernest experiences the natural beauty of Tajikistan, along with the natural warmth of its people. This episode starts with Ernest exploring some of the mountains of Tajikistan and chatting with local photographer Bakhriddin Isamutdinov. 

Ernest sticks out in Tajikistan, but that doesn’t stop him from visiting the atelier of local fashion designer Khurshed Sattorov and adding a Tajik touch to his wardrobe with a shirt featuring a traditional design. The next day, Ernest meets with his friend and tour guide Mohammed Istam to discuss what he loves about Tajikistan. Later, Ernest walks through Nowruz Palace, one of the largest tea houses in the world, while admiring its intricately detailed architecture. 

Tour guide Barno Rajabova recounts some of the history of this palace before Ernest meets with Audrey Jannin, an educator and co-founder of Women Rock Pamirs. This organization aims to empower young women through trips that allow them to get out in nature and explore their own home country. Then it’s time to refuel with a traditional lunch at Toqi Restaurant. Afterwards, Ernest is then joined by his friend and university student Valijon Juraev, who guides him through a local market, giving a mini lesson on agriculture in Tajikistan. 

Then, it’s off to the Museum of Hulbuk. There, Ernest learns the history of Tajikistan with Abdullo Khojaev, one of the archaeologists that helped dig up quite a few incredibly important artifacts. Ernest even holds one of these thousands of years old artifacts in his hands. Luckily, he didn’t drop it. Together they visit Castle Karon before Ernest meets with rock climber/ media maven Nigina Kudratova. They chat about her work and the stunning landscapes of Tajikistan before and Ernest ends his day looking over the river that separates Tajikistan from Afghanistan, simply enjoying the view.
