Ep 308 - Québec City, Canada: La Vieille Capitale

“A scrumptious escape into a well-seasoned mélange of languages, food, and fun!"

In this episode, Ernest travels to la belle Ville de Québec—Québec City—for a scrumptious escape into a well-seasoned mélange of languages, food, and fun!

The adventure starts off with a look into Québec’s roots, as Ernest is joined by Huron-Wendat storyteller Dominic Sainte-Marie who tells the history and legacy of the Wendat community, as well as introduces Ernest to their traditional music and dance. Ernest then explores the Kabir-Kouba Waterfall, which is connected to the Saint-Charles River, and enjoys a scenic canoe ride with Dominic as they paddle towards the Hôtel-Musée Premières Nations site. After their trek across the water, Ernest and Dominic are rewarded with a traditional and delicious Huron-Wendat meal at Restaurant La Traite.

Later, Ernest meets up with friend and tour guide Simon Pelletier, whose passion for old Québec history is evident in his knowledge of Le Château Frontenac, one of Québec City’s most famous landmarks and hotels. Next, Ernest meets with friend Isabel Madrid for a tour around Limoilou, a neighborhood full of restaurants, markets, galleries, and boutiques.  After fueling up with a coffee, Ernest and Isabel head to restaurant Le Cendrillon, where they sample flavorful plates. Then, Isabel takes Ernest to visit Gallerie Lewis, where Emily Lewis runs her own studio and exhibition space and sells her personal jewelry line. Next is time for a true taste of Canadian cuisine, as Ernest and Isabel head to Fistons Bistro, a neighborhood favorite known for its classic Canadian poutine.

The next stop is Île d’Orléans, an island just a few miles downstream from Québec City famous for its stunning rural landscape, and delicious agricultural products. Ernest is joined by food journalist Allison Van Rassle to show some of her favorite spots, including family-owned business Cassis Monna & Filles. Here, Ernest meets owner Anne Monna, who shares how her family’s restaurant came to be where it is today. Another one of Allison’s spots is La Vinaigrerie du Capitaine, where vinegar-maker Vincent Noёl shares his process for turning the fruits of the island into gourmet treats.
