Ep 304 - Saint Croix, USVI: Taste of the Tropics
“Enjoy a bounty of comfort foods, explore serenic tide pools, and even catch some crustaceans!"
In this episode, Ernest heads to the isle of Saint Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, to enjoy a bounty of comfort foods, explore serene tide pools, and even catch some crustaceans!Â
The adventure begins at Point Udall, a monument that marks the very first sunrise of this century in the United States, and also an incredible spot to view the sunrise over St. Croix. Then, Ernest is in for a delicious food tour around Christiansted, led by writer, entrepreneur and foodie, Anquanette Gaspard. Ernest gets a kick of spice at Singh’s Fast Food, famous for their Caribbean roti. Next is dessert, as Ernest and Anquanette head over to Singh’s bakery to taste some of St. Croix’s best pastries.
Between meals, Anquanette gives Ernest a lesson in Christiansted’s history, discussing the role enslaved people played in building the city’s impressive architecture as they stroll through Sunday Market Square. Last in the food tour is one of Anquanette’s favorite comfort food spots, Zeny’s Restaurant, which specializes in Latin cuisine and where Ernest gets a taste of some of St. Croix’s most-known local dishes.
Ernest hits the road for a rugged Jeep ride to see some of St. Croix’s natural wonders, venturing to the Annaly Bay tide pools for a serenic swim. Then, Ernest goes west for a historical tour of Freedom City, Frederiksted with Carnival designer Shamari Haynes. Ernest then joins Chef Carmen for an island tradition of catching crabs on the beach and cooking them up for a fresh crab pot.
