5 Most Sustainable Airlines

One of the biggest consumer concerns with air travel is the negative environmental effect. The aviation industry has been under increased scrutiny in recent years due to its carbon footprint. Several airlines have taken steps to reduce their ecological effects moving forward. While no one is perfect, and there is no way to completely eliminate emissions from air travel, here are a few airlines making positive efforts toward sustainability.

Finnair
Finnair is a Finnish airline that has made significant efforts to reduce its carbon footprint. The airline has invested in more fuel-efficient aircraft, including the Airbus A350, which consumes 25% less fuel than its predecessor. The company has also implemented a carbon offset program, allowing passengers to offset the carbon emissions from their flights by investing in renewable energy projects.

Alaska Airlines
This US-based airline is already a leader in fuel efficiency in the airline industry. Their aircrafts use an innovative navigation system that helps reduce the miles covered on flights, ultimately resulting in less fuel consumption. They are also committing to the Greener Skies Program, a partnership with the Port of Seattle and Boeing, wherein all to and from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport will be powered by sustainable biofuel.

Qantas
The Australian flag carrier has set an ambitious goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The airline has invested in more fuel-efficient aircraft and implemented a program to reduce single-use plastics on its flights. Qantas has also introduced a carbon offset program, investing in sustainable aviation fuel.

Etihad Airways
The national airline of the United Arab Emirates has implemented a range of sustainability initiatives. Similarly to Finnair, they have invested in more fuel-efficient aircraft, including the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which consumes 20% less fuel than its predecessor. The airline has partnered with many different organizations to help achieve its goal. The partnerships help the company to test and implement practices to reduce fuel consumption, carbon emissions, and noise.

Air France
The French airline is a member of the Air France-KLM Group and takes part in its goal to become the most eco-conscious airline in the world. Their primary focus is to transition their aircrafts from traditional high-carbon jet fuel to new biofuels. These new fuel types can potentially lower harmful emissions by up to 80%.

Next time you plan on traveling via air, consider making a more sustainable choice and choose an airline that considers its environmental impact. These five airlines are all making positive efforts to reduce their carbon footprint and would be a great eco-conscious option.
