FLY BROTHER Radio #006: Dr. Yvette McQueen
"Travel has to start somewhere. There are often people that feel like ‘I can’t go anywhere because I can’t go to Paris,’ but you can go one town over on the bus. There are ways of getting a little bit of travel in your life.” —Dr. Yvette McQueen
On this episode of the Fly Brother Radio Show, Ernest sits down with Dr. Yvette McQueen, an emergency medicine physician and fascinating traveler who partially satisfies her wanderlust while working as a traveling physician across the United States. When she’s not working stateside, she also takes her expertise on medical mission trips around the world, especially in Africa, teaching healthcare providers and speaking to the general public about various health topics. But her work doesn’t stop there. With the help of her church and local groups on the ground in places like Malawi and Burkina Faso, she has also helped organize and participate in missions to build schools and create local literacy programs that teach women how to read and write.
Throughout the episode, Dr. McQueen also dives into the importance of taking health precautions when traveling and shares some tips like staying hydrated, wearing sunscreen, and avoiding certain foods before getting on a plane. Ernest and Dr. McQueen also tackle topics like tropical diseases, vaccinations, medications overseas, and more. Listeners may want to take notes while listening to this part of the episode!
Beyond her impressive career, Dr. McQueen and Ernest also discuss how people can explore their own home countries if they aren’t able or ready to travel internationally. At the time of the recording, Dr. McQueen had already visited 36 states, and though she enjoys her domestic travels, her favorite destination is Paris. After all, she did study French for seven years and her first teacher was a Black Parisian.
